Commute Smart: The Long Ride Home

Watch it online!

Every work day, over 35,000 people commute in and out of Santa Barbara. Those cars contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion, while wasting thousands of dollars in gasoline. The average commuter in Santa Barbara County spends 42 minutes a day driving to and from work - that’s 8 days a year spent in our cars! And with construction on the Highway 101 expansion project starting this summer, more traffic delays can be expected.
The City of Santa Barbara has become a leader in transportation demand management, with a program that encourages people to consider alternatives to driving alone. In this television special, you'll see how any business can develop its own commuter benefits program. Spend some time in buses, vanpools, carpools, and trains, and see how offering incentives can make these modes of transportation hard to resist.
You'll also learn how sometimes the best way to commute may be to not commute at all - via telecommuting, a compressed work week, or a flexible schedule. If you're currently driving alone and try one of these alternatives for even 1 day a week, you can save money, gain more time for yourself, and benefit the environment.
